Sriracha Fried Cabbage with Ham and Mushrooms

Happy New Year Everyone!!
I hope everyone had a safe New Year's Eve and I wish everyone a blessed 2015.

It is hard to believe we are already in the year 2015. It seems like only yesterday everyone was worrying about Y2K. Time is definitely flying by but my hope is this year I can provide you all with some great new recipes.

I wanted to start the new year off with a recipe that included a new year's staple - Cabbage. Now, I will admit, I have never made cabbage on New Year's Day. However, I know a lot of people do cook cabbage on this day. I also know a lot of people throw in the silver dollar into the pot of cooking cabbage. I know my grandmothers use to and so does my mother.

I guess I never followed this tradition because I do not like boiled cabbage. I have tried it several times and I just do not like the taste. However, give me fried cabbage and I will eat the  entire skillet. So, this recipe is for individuals like myself. It is also a great way to keep the tradition of cabbage on new year's going without boiling any.

If you search the internet, there are numerous recipes for fried cabbage. There are many different variations. This recipe is my take on fried cabbage. I am not saying there may be a recipe similar to this one out there in cyber space. However, I have not found one yet.

Sriracha Fried Cabbage with Ham and Mushrooms
by The Busy Cooking Momma

 You will need:
1/2 to 1 pound of ham, cubed
1 pkg of fresh mushrooms, cleaned and roughly cut
1 medium size head of cabbage, roughly chopped
1 1/2 sticks of butter
Salt/Pepper
Soy sauce
Sriracha sauce

In a large pan, melt one stick of butter over medium high heat. (Oh yeah, it is one of those recipes)

Add your ham once the butter is melted.

Cook your ham for approximately 2 to 4 minutes, then add in your cabbage.
Make sure to use a big enough skillet!!

Season your cabbage/ham with salt and pepper to taste. Mix all ingredients well. Place remaining butter on
top of cabbage and cover with a lid.

Cook on medium low heat for 15-20 minutes to allow cabbage to begin softening.

After 15-20 minutes, remove the lid and add in your mushrooms. Cook another 5 to 7 minutes (with the lid in place).
If you do not like mushrooms, you can omit this step. This recipe is great without them.

Remove your lid after 5-7 minutes and add your soy sauce and sriracha. Two to three times around the pan with each is sufficient (approximately 3 to 4 tsp of soy and 4 to 5 Tbsp of sriracha).

Give everything one good final stir and cook another 5 to 7 minutes (with the lid in place).

I served mine with a side of mac and cheese.

I love this meal. It is one of my go to favorites. My men love this meal as well.

One final note, as I mentioned previously, you do not have to use mushrooms in this recipe. I have made it both ways and we like it either way. My family and I love mushrooms, so I do add them to a lot of recipes. Always remember, you can always leave out or add your favorite ingredients.

I hope you enjoy!

Love to you all from The Busy Cooking Momma!
